Legendary American rock band R.E.M. have announced on their website that they have decided to split up. The announcement read: "To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening."
R.E.M. were formed in 1980 and became one of the biggest bands on the planet with hits like "Losing My Religion", "Man On The Moon", "Everybody Hurts" and "Shiny Happy People". They almost single-handedly brought indie music into the mainstream and paved the way for other bands to follow in their footsteps, including Nirvana and many other bands to come out of the Seattle scene in the 1990's.
